My journey

Namaste, I'm Tanya.

I’m a mother, a wife, a visionary, a dancer and a creator.

I’m a lover of poetry, Buddhist philosophy and dogs.

I’m also a yoga and embodiment teacher and the founder of Seed Yoga.

Like so many girls , growing up in the 70’s and swimming in the sea of diet culture, I came from the ‘clean plate club’ and remember my mother always being on some sort of diet. I struggled with an eating disorder, anxiety and depression from the age of 13 . Binging, purging, calorie counting, rigidity, and self-judgment became the way I lived my life. This behaviour continued until well into my thirties — and it was exhausting. The desire to be thin promised me all that I felt I was missing: popularity, belonging, happiness, success and beauty. I lost my sense of self and lived my life from the outside in. My body was a constant project that I had to fix and control. It kept me very busy and very disconnected from my true self. I was a people pleaser, a perfectionist and lived by everyone else’s rules. I restricted and deprived myself for years although I didn’t really realise it, as it was the norm.

I had no idea of who I was or what I stood for. I just followed the crowd always searching for approval and permission from the outside. I derived my sense of happiness and self worth through two things; what I could control and what I could achieve, oh yes, and what my body looked like.

Yoga found me in my late thirties when I moved next door to a yoga studio and began my journey inwards. I began working with a coach to unwind negative patterns, obsessive behaviours and began releasing these patterns from both my body and mind. It certainly hasn’t been an easy path; I have had to learn ‘let go’ and soften — in both body and mind — and to learn self compassion and loving kindness.

My first-hand experience and understanding of the complexities of these challenges bring an enriching depth to my teaching. One that allows me to help others on their path.

I teach yoga as a holistic practice; one where mind, body, and spirit are integrated as a powerful platform to encourage everybody to experience self-empowerment, connection and trust in their own self-worth. Inviting a sense of deep wholeness and healing into their life, I share tools that will help you live an intentional, body-positive life of presence and purpose.

For me, yoga has carved pathways of self-enquiry, loving-kindness and self-care through which I have been able to reclaim my power, and move through barriers to live my fullest expression and potential.

It has become my greatest joy to support others to do the same.

Ultimately, my professional and personal life is guided by the principle of “Thich Nhat Hanh” or “Let your life be your message”.

I look forward to meeting you.

Tanya

My gratitudes

This business was created from the heart. But I could not have done it without the following beautiful people in my life…

My biggest thank you is to the kindest, funniest, gentlest man on this Earth — my hubby Pete — who has worked so incredibly hard to support me on my journey.

Heartfelt gratitude to Kathryn and Haydie who introduced me to the art of yoga and have encouraged my own yogic expression.

To my teacher and friend Celia, who saw the light in me and helped me fan it.

To my children, Laura and Ewen, who remind me every day of what is truly important.

To my brave sisters, Stacey and Gabby, you both have so much courage.

To Aunty Sue (my wise and funny godmother) for your care and friendship.

Deep gratitude to my funny, salt-of-the-earth, sweet, loving, inspirational girlfriends (I hope you know who you are). Having you in my life means the world and I cherish you all for the unique qualities you bring.

To my students for showing up not only for my classes but for themselves (and their parents) for guiding their children towards a positive future.

Thank you to Shannon Deutrom and Sweet Spot Images for the beautiful photos on this site.

And last but not least, to my mum and my dad, for giving me the precious gift of life. I miss you both every day.

Thank you all.
