Too Much, Too Fast: Why Nervous System Care Matters More Than Ever

We live in a time where our attention is increasingly being pulled in a thousand different directions all at once.

We see more.

We know more.

We witness more and more suffering, more injustice and more information - faster than ever before.

Technology has given us extraordinary access to each other and the world at large. It has opened up conversations, amplified voices and made collective and social change more visible and possible than ever before.

Yet, our nervous systems are not designed to evolve at this fast pace. Human beings are not designed to metabolise endless streams of information, images, stories, and emotional input without pause.

What we take in does not just pass though our minds - it moves through our bodies, our nervous systems, and our felt sense of safety and meaning. When the volume and velocity of input exceeds our capacity to process it, something has to give.

Often, what gives is our capacity to be present.

We scroll.

We numb.

We disengage.

We withdraw.

We disconnect and stop feeling.

Not because we don’t care but often because we have lost the capacity to care.

Our world is accelerating faster than our biology can adapt and this can tip us into chronic overwhelm and burnout.

And for those who are more sensitive, this impact is felt even more acutely.  Our nervous systems are being asked to hold too much without enough time to integrate, rest, or repair.

If you constantly feel tired, scattered, flat, or emotionally dulled, it does not mean there is something wrong with you. It is because your nervous system is doing exactly what it is designed to do when the load becomes too much.

To be human is to require time to feel what we feel.

In Ayurveda, this state is often described as vata imbalance.

Vata governs movement, speed, air, and the nervous system.  When balanced it brings creativity, insight, adaptability, and inspiration. When aggravated, it creates anxiety, scattered attention, fatigue, and a sense of being untethered.

Sound familiar?

Constant stimulation.

Always on.

Too much information.

Not enough time and space to digest it all.

No bloody wonder we feel so tired and overwhelmed by the world around us!

So the question is -what can we do to counterbalance the conditions we are living in?

Vata imbalance is not resolved by doing more or optimising ourselves but instilling steadiness through practices that ground us and slow us down. This helps us to create rhythm, warmth and embodiment in both body and mind.

Yoga, mindfulness and slow practices help us anchor back into the body, to counterbalance the vata imbalance of restlessness, anxiety and fatigue that feels wired.

This is the intention behind both of my classes - restorative yoga and yoga for nervous system care.
